Valedictory Ceremony of Spoken Sanskrit Workshop

An eight-day Spoken Sanskrit for beginners workshop started on February 12, which was conducted by Acharya Sumesh Somen Kuzhivelil from Samskrita Bharati, concluded on a high note with enthusiastic participation from over 30 students of all ages. The workshop, designed to introduce participants to the beauty and structure of Sanskrit as a spoken language, fostered an engaging and immersive learning experience. Through interactive sessions, Acharya Sumesh guided students in mastering fundamental vocabulary, pronunciation and conversational skills, making Sanskrit learning both enjoyable and practical.

The valedictory ceremony was a testament to the participants’ dedication and progress. Students showcased their newly acquired skills through Sanskrit songs, skits, and the recitation of shlokas, demonstrating their confidence and enthusiasm for the language. In her address, Ms. Vijayalakshmy Sunderrajan, Director NSCBICC expressed her gratitude to Acharya Sumesh for his unwavering commitment to teaching Sanskrit. She commended the participants for their enthusiasm and encouraged them to continue their journey in learning this ancient yet timeless language. The event was supported by the Mission and ICCR as part of their ongoing efforts to promote Indian culture and heritage among the diaspora community.

 

Shared Imaginations: Fragrance of Hindi Poetry in Malaysia

Mission and NSCBICC organised a special poet conference – “Shared Imaginations: Fragrance of Hindi poetry in Malaysia”. High Commissioner H. E. Shri B. N. Reddy congratulated all participants and Hindi lovers for participating in the program and hope that this fragrance of Hindi poetry always smell like this in Malaysia. More than 15 Hindi poetry lovers recited their original Hindi poems in this poet conference. Those who participated are Anju Purohit Neeraj Malhotra, Mohit Raizada, Aparajita Rajoria, Chirag Chugh, Prachi Goyal, Hemant Verma, Rajbanshi Sukalal, Sadho Ram, Vinod Kumar Singh, Sunil Kumar Chaubey, Ankaj Kumar Sinha, Deepti Tank, Kajal Mahatha and Ashima Mishra. Mission congratulated all participants and Hindi lovers. Hindi is being established as a strong language on the global platform, and its impact can be clearly seen in Malaysia too. Hindi literature and poetry make these relationships more intense. The Indian expatriate community living in Malaysia has kept the Hindi language and culture alive, which is highly commendable. The Mission and NSCBICC are actively organising various Hindi propaganda-related activities in collaboration with schools and community organisations. For years many cultural organisations and schools have participated enthusiastically in the Hindi Day programmes. This event is another important step towards promotion of Hindi language and Hindi poetry in Malaysia. High Commissioner also felicitated all the participants including Sanskrit and Hindi teachers in NSCBICC. Counsellor Mr. Vikram Vardhan participated in the poet’s conference in the Indian High Commission and narrated his original creations. Director NSCBICC Ms. Vijayalakshmy Sunderrajan thanked the audience and participants in her Vote of Thanks for their greatest support and unveiling enthusiasm.

NSCBICC in partnership with National Academy of Arts, Culture and Heritage (ASWARA) organised ‘Bharathanrityam’, a lecture demonstration on Bharatnatyam by Padma Vibhushan Dr. Padma Subrahmanyam, a prominent Bharatnatyam dancer. The session which held at Dewan Seri Cendana, ASWARA Complex commenced with the Welcome Remarks by Associate Professor Technologist Dr. Khairul Azril Ismail, the Deputy Rector of Academic Affairs, ASWARA who represented Rector ASWARA. In his remarks, he thanked NSCBICC for collaborating with ASWARA for the knowledgeable session and open door for future collaborations and connections. Director NSCBICC in her remarks expressed her gratitude and warm wishes from the High Commission for the presence of Padma Vibhushan and this seems to be seen as a greatest opportunity to impart exclusive knowledge from a legendary and pioneer artiste in Indian classical dance. The Mak Yong performance, which is a traditional dance-drama that combines acting, singing and dancing and to be believed to have originated in the old Malay Kingdom was performed elegantly by the students of ASWARA. This was an eye catching and captivating dance moves made the audience engaged with the performers.

The special dialogue session which was the highlight of the event stole the attention of the audience. Padma Vibhushan Dr. Padma Subrahmanyam who is the President of Nrithyodaya, India and Founder – Managing Trustee of Bharata – Ilango Foundation for Asian Culture with full enthusiastically made the comparison between Mak Yong and Bharatanrityam which represents the confluence of the Marga technique of Natya Sastra and the Desi technique of South India, namely Bharata Natyam. It is a style evolved and popularised by her. Padma Shri Datuk Ramli Ibrahim, Chairman of Sutra Foundation who was the moderator fort the session questioned Dr. Padma with questions that connects both Mak Yong and Bharatanrityam. Her spontaneous and live comparisons of muthiras, karanas between both forms of dances put the audience awe. And for the fact, both performances have the similarities in terms of all aspects mainly the karanas and muthiras. 

This impactful presentation was attended by Associate Professor Technologist Dr. Zulkifli Ab Rashid (Deputy Rector of Student Affairs, ASWARA), Mr. Prabhakaran Nair (Founder President, Malaysia – India Heritage Society), prominent veena player Kalaimamani Smt Jayalakshmi Sekhar, Mr. Ramlan Mohd Imam (Director of Innovation, Strategic Network & Marketing Division, ASWARA), Deans of Faculties, Heads of Departments, lecturers and students of ASWARA, Leaders of community associations and organisations, Gurus from various art institutions and academy and many. Padma Nrithalaya Arts in collaboration with NSCBICC proudly presented a mesmerising Bharathanrityam recital by Padma Vibhushan Dr. Padma Subrahmanyam and Smt. Mahati Kannan. The evening featured a stellar ensemble of renowned musicians, Shri Kannan Balakrishnan on Veena; Smt. Gayatri Kannan on Nattuvangam & Vocal – Smt. Vaishnavi Anand; Shri Nagai P. Sriram on Mridangam and Shri Anand Vishwanathan on Violin. The event was graced by H. E. Shri B. N. Reddy, High Commissioner of India to Malaysia, who delivered an inspiring address, recognising the unparalleled contributions of Padma Vibhushan Dr. Padma Subrahmanyam in preserving and promoting Indian classical dance, not only in India but across Southeast Asia. He also commended Smt. Vinosree Shangkar, Founder and Artistic Director of Padma Nrithalaya Arts, for her tireless efforts in fostering Indian performing arts in Malaysia. The organisers extended their heartfelt gratitude to the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Malaysia for their generous support in making this cultural evening a grand success. This event was a significant milestone in strengthening cultural ties and celebrating the rich heritage of Indian classical arts within the Malaysian Indian diaspora. Deputy High Commissioner Ms. Subhashini Narayanan, Director NSCBICC Ms. Vijayalakshmy Sunderrajan and Padma Shri Datuk Ramli Ibrahim, Chairman of Sutra Foundation were among the guest of honours who attended this special occasion.

High Commission and NSCBICC held a curtain-raiser event to mark the inauguration of Kashi Tamil Sangamam (KTS) 3.0. KTS 3.0 was inaugurated by Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi in Varanasi on 15 Feb 2025 and will be held till February 24, 2025. High Commissioner H. E. Shri B. N. Reddy welcomed the gathering and shared that KTS 3.0 aims to rediscover and strengthen the centuries old connect between the two ancient knowledge centres of the country, Kashi & Tamil Nadu. High Commissioner also urged the Tamil diaspora in Malaysia to join the Kashi Tamil Sangamam 3.0 at Varanasi, in large numbers. Dr. Nedunchelian Vengu and Vaidyar Sanjay Kumar Ramachandran delivered speeches on the theme of KTS 3.0, “Contribution of Sage Agasthiyarin the field of Classical Tamil Literature and Grammar and Contribution to the Siddha System of Medicine” respectively and were felicitated on the occasion. The event was attended by about 100 members including representatives of various community associations, members of PEPTIM, and media representatives. A book on Agasthiyar written by Mr.Kizhambur Sankara Subramanian, editor of 94 years old Kalaimagal monthly magazine in Tamil Nadu, was presented to High Commissioner on the occasion. The book was slated to be released at the Kashi Tamil Sangamam 3.0 in Varanasi on February 15, 2025. Participant of the 66th KIP, Ms Navittra Gunasagaran from Malaysia, who will be traveling to Varanasi to take part in KTS 3.0 also attended the curtain raiser event. A video on KTS 3.0 was screened on this occasion.

Director NSCBICC, Ms. Vijayalakshmy Sunderrajan participated as guest of honour in the Mridangam Arangetram of Durga Laksmie, a disciple of Guru Shri Darmen Krishnan. Durga became as the first female mridangist in Malaysia. Durga represented the Sugam Karnatica team for Malaysia at the International Dance and Music Festival held in Chandigarh, India, organized by ICCR New Delhi. She is currently a tutor at Sugam Karnatica, teaching Mridangam lessons to the younger generation. Director congratulated Durga for her notable achievements and Sugam for sustainably growing Indian culture in Malaysia.

In conjunction with Thaipusam Festival 2025, a special workshop called ‘Kanthan Kavadi’ was organised. The objective of this workshop is to teach and educate on the devotional art of ‘Kavadi Attam’ also known as Kavadi dance / performance, a traditional Indian dance form deeply rooted in culture and spirituality. The workshop which was participated over 80 students from various age groups achieved the objective and the participants learnt the skills and techniques of performing Kavadi Attam. The workshop was officiated by YB Senator Puan Saraswathy Kandasami, Deputy Minister of National Unity and Ms. Vijayalakshmy Sunderrajan (Director NSCBICC) also graced the event. The workshop also included the making of Kavadi making and crafting.

Ramakrishna Mission Malaysia, in partnership with NSCBICC and the Mission commemorated the Birth Anniversary celebrations of Swami Vivekananda as well as the 25 years of presence of Ramakrishna Mission Malaysia in Malaysia. This event titled ‘Face the Brute’ was the sixth of the 25 events planned by Ramakrishna Mission Malaysia, officiated by High Commissioner H. E. Shri B. N. Reddy, held under guidance of its President Revered Swami Supriyananda. The talk was conducted as part of the Promotion of Cultural Ties through Diaspora (PCTD) scheme under the Ministry of External Affairs of India. The first series of the 25 events was launched by Deputy High Commissioner Ms. Subhashini Narayanan with the first topic “BE & MAKE” in Kuala Lumpur on January 12, 2025 and “Arise, Awake” was the 2nd of the 25 events was organised by the Mission at Penang Institute on January 19, 2025 which was officiated by YB Dato’ Seri Sundarajoo Somu, Penang State EXCO (State Minister) for Housing and Environment represented the Chief Minister of Penang.

During this lecture, High Commissioner in his inaugural address welcomed the gathering and lauded the significant efforts of Ramakrishna Mission Malaysia by understanding humanitarian and service activities in Malaysia besides unwavering commitment to the spiritual and social welfare of humanity. Highlight of the event was the launching of an e-booklet on ‘Swami Vivekananda in Penang” jointly by High Commissioner and Revered Swami Supriyananda. The contents of the e-booklet were shared with the audience through a presentation by Ms. Beno N. L. Zephine (First Secretary). NSCBICC also organised an exhibition on the life and teachings of Swami Vivekananda on this occasion along with a book display. Keynote address was delivered by Revered Swami Supriyananda, President of Ramakrishna Mission Malaysia.

Swami Supriyananda Ji’s keynote address on “Face the Brute” inspired by Swami Vivekananda’s famous quote, emphasised the power of courage, resilience and self-transformation. He explored how fear hinders personal and spiritual growth and how confronting challenges directly can lead to strength and wisdom. Deputy High Commissioner Ms. Subhashini Narayanan, Director NSCBICC Ms. Vijayalakshmy Sunderrajan also participated, along with an audience of over 150 participants including members of Ramakrishna Mission Malaysia, members of NSCBICC, representatives of various community associations, cultural organisations, institutes and academies.

The Mission was honoured by the presence of YB Tuan Gobind Singh Deo, Minister of Digital who represented the Government of Malaysia as the Guest of Honour for the National Day Reception. High Commission deeply appreciates the presence of YB Senator Saraswathy Kandasami, Deputy Minister of National Unity, Raja Dato’ Nushirwan Zainal Abidin, Director General Majlis Keselamatan Negara, Dato’ Anis Rizana Binti Mohd Zainudin, Director General, Kastam Malaysia, Dato Jana Santhiran Muniayan, Secretary General Kementerian Pengangkutan Malaysia, Dato’ Bala Chandran Tharman, Deputy Secretary General (Multilateral Affairs) Wisma Putra, Majlis Keselamatan Negera, Vice Admiral Dato Ts. The National Day Reception on occasion of the 76th Republic Day of India witnessed a captivating Cultural Show by Tapasya Foundation Society, an Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) Troupe showcasing the vibrant and rich culture of India and performance comprise off Shiv Tandav, Gujarati folk, Unity in Diversity dance and Vande Mataram; and a show-stopping saxophone performance by reputed performer Mr. Wan Mohd Andre from Penang, Malaysia.

The Tapasaya Foundation Society is a dedicated initiative committed to the promotion and preservation of Chhau and contemporary dance forms.  The Indian Council for Cultural Relations troupe visited Malaysia from 21-28 January and performed at various cities across Malaysia. High Commission also extends its deep appreciation to the 15 Member choir from the Malaysian Association for the Blind for their rendition of National Anthems of Malaysia and India during the reception. In addition, the MAB choir also sang two songs- one in Hindi Language and second in Bahasa Malaysia. On the occasion of India’s 76th Republic Day celebrations, High Commission also organised various stalls including One District One Product Booth, aimed at promoting one unique product from each district of India, with a view to foster balanced regional development across all districts of the country; Indian Defence Industry Stall, showcasing India’s defence production and manufacturing capabilities; AYUSH Desk set up by PEPTIM, displaying the various kinds of traditional medicine systems; and TRIFED Stall, (Tribal Cooperation Marketing Federation of India), with a view to promote marketing and sales of tribal arts and crafts in India and worldwide, among other things.

The 76th Republic Day celebrations were held at India House with immense zeal and enthusiasm with over 1800 fellow Indian community members joining the event. High Commissioner H. E. Shri B. N. Reddy hoisted the tricolour Indian Flag and read out excerpts from the address of Hon’ble President of India. Members of the Indian community, school children and Non-Resident Indian women entrepreneurs in Malaysia made the event special with their active participation. Audiences were enthralled by the fervent atmosphere created by the patriotic performances from Indian community organizations and Schools students. Students from Global Indian International School (GIIS), Vikas International School and Sprouts Academy performed dance medleys. Patriotic songs in various India. In addition, celebrating the spirit of #NariShakti, Indian NRI Women entrepreneurs showcased diverse range of products at India House as well as displayed Indian delicacies in various food stalls. Moreover, High Commissioner H. E. Shri B. N. Reddy also felicitated the Top 5 best performers in the NRI Category in the Bharat Ko Janiye Quiz 2024. The Bharat Ko Janiye quiz was conducted from 11 November to 10 December 2024 to motivate overseas Indian and foreign youth to enhance their knowledge about India and to awaken the curiosity of the new generation to know more about India so that they develop an all-round understanding of India. Malaysia figured among the countries with highest participation in the quiz. The Top five (05) best performers in the NRI category from Malaysia in the BKJ 2024 were Mr. Adish Umathe; Mr. Neeraj Malhotra; Ms. Akhila Sujith; Ms. Shuwaathi Thamil Manni and Mr. Chirag Chugh.

In conjunction with 76th Republic Day of India, a special contemporary dance performance was performed by ICCR sponsored troupe, Tapasaya Foundation Society, New Delhi. In her welcome remarks, Ms. Vijayalakshmy Sunderrajan, Director of NSCBICC thanked each individual attended the occasion and to celebrate the Incredible India through their performances. In their programme, Tapasaya had through the language of dance, performance had begun with a tribute to India’s classical and folk dances, showcasing the country’s diverse cultural tapestry. From the graceful movements of Kathak and Bharatanatyam to the rhythmic beats of folk dance the performance also was dedicated to ISRO’s Chandrayaan-3 mission, reflecting India’s remarkable journey in space exploration. Through robotics and contemporary dance, they portrayed the rapid growth of the Indian textile industry, an industry that weaves tradition with innovation. Director NSCBICC felicitated the 10-member troupe. An audience of over 100 people enjoyed the performance of this ICCR sponsored contemporary dance troupe to celebrate the Republic Day of India.

NSCBICC celebrated Parakram Divas commoraring the birth anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. Ms.Vijayalakshmy Sunderrajan, Director of NSCBICC garlanded the Netaji bust at the reception followed by floral shradanjali. The community leaders and association heads joined the Director to offer the floral tribute. Government of India has decided to celebrate his birthday on the 23rd day of January every year to inspire people of the country, especially the youth, to act with fortitude in the face of adversity as Netaji did, and to infuse in them a spirit of patriotic fervour. Netaji birth anniversary is also celebrated as Day of Valour. This day is being highlighted the inspiring life and contributions of Netaji to India’s freedom struggle and his mobilisation of Indian National Army (INA) in Southeast Asia. Also highlighted the legacy of Netaji, which is revered and remembered till date in Malaysia, through the inspiring outreach activities of Netaji Welfare Foundation and Netaji Service Centre in different parts of Malaysia.

Deputy High Commissioner in her remarks thanked the Chief Guest of Honour for gracing the occasion and the discerning audiences in Ipoh for their encouragement to the visiting artistes from India. The discussion centred on exploring various avenues for future collaboration to further strengthen cultural ties between India and Malaysia. Key topics included facilitating performances by Indian and Malaysian artistes at NSCBICC and encouraging the participation of local Malaysian artists in prestigious festivals and cultural events held in India. Additionally, the meeting explored opportunities for cultural exchange programmes, workshops and joint initiatives aimed at fostering mutual appreciation and artistic development. The dialogue reaffirmed the shared commitment to enhancing cultural diplomacy and providing platforms for artists from both nations to showcase their talents while promoting cross-cultural engagement.

A lecture demonstration featuring the ICCR-sponsored dance group Tapasaya Foundation Society from India, in collaboration with Kumpulan Selendang Perak (KSP), a renowned state dance team, was successfully conducted. This cultural exchange training aimed to foster artistic collaboration and enhance the participants’ understanding of contemporary dance techniques.

Led by the esteemed choreographer Mr. Ajay Kumar and his team of dancers from the Tapasaya Foundation Society, the session provided an immersive learning experience for the members of KSP. Through interactive demonstrations and guided exercises, the dancers were introduced to intricate movements, rhythmic patterns and the expressive nuances of contemporary dance. The workshop also highlighted the fusion of traditional Indian dance elements with modern interpretations, encouraging participants to explore new creative dimensions.

The short video on Mahakumbh 2025 was played during the Birth anniversary celebration of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose followed by a speech by the High Commissioner of India H.E. Shri B. N. Reddy wherein he highlighted the ongoing global celebration of spirituality, culture and sustainability at Maha Kumbh 2025, a seamless and spiritually enriching journey for the devotees. These Maha Kumb Mela videos were also played for the audience during the cultural performances of the ICCR sponsored Tapasaya troupe at NSCBICC on the 25th January 2025.

Incredible celebration of the 128th Birth Anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose with ICCR sponsored Tapasya Dance Group’s ‘Atulya Bharat’ dance performance. The 128th birth anniversary celebrations of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose were organised by the Netaji Welfare Foundation in partnership with the Mission and NSCBICC. The event began with an inspiring speech by Indian National Army (INA) Veteran Dato’ Jeyaraj C. Rajarao (age 93 years). High Commissioner B.N. Reddy conveyed heartfelt gratitude to Netaji Welfare Foundation and Netaji Service Centre for spearheading the dissemination of the vision of Netaji among Malaysian youth, in particular school students. A mesmerising contemporary dance performance of Atulya Bharat by ICCR sponsored Tapasya Dance Group from India, was deeply appreciated. Master Rajas Chugh, a student from India studying at Sayfol International School gave a brilliant account of Netaji’s life and vision. The Indian Cultural Center at Batu Caves was officially inaugurated by Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Dr. SA. Vigneswaran, President of Malaysian Indian Congress. Director of NSCBICC Ms. Vijayalakshmy Sunderrajan attended as the guest of honour, representing the High Commission of India. The centre is a vital step in preserving and promoting Indian culture in Malaysia by offering free classes in Thevaram, music and dance. It will also serve as a platform to showcase the richness of Indian traditional arts and heritage to the community and future generations. NSCBICC is proud to be part of this inaugural event as it had officially handed over the traditional Indian musical instruments from ICCR New Delhi at a ceremony which was held on May 11, 2024 (Saturday) at the Sri Subramaniyar Swamy Temple, Batu Caves with the presence of His Excellency Shri B.N. Reddy, High Commissioner of India to Malaysia. High Commissioner handed over the musical instruments to Tan Sri Datuk Dr. R. Nadarajah, Chairman of Sri Maha Mariamman Temple Dhevasthanam, Kuala Lumpur. These instruments are displayed at their Cultural Center Hall for public. During the inaugural event, several traditional cultural performances were performed.

Ramakrishna Mission Malaysia, in partnership with High Commission and NSCBICC held a commemorative event to mark 25 years of Ramakrishna Mission Malaysia as well as birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda at Penang Institute, George Town, on 19 Jan 2025. This event titled “Arise, Awake” was the 2nd of the 25 events planned by RK Mission Malaysia-held under guidance of its President Rev Swami Supriyananda. The series of events was launched with the first event “BE & MAKE” in Kuala Lumpur on 12 January 2025. YB Dato’ Seri Sundarajoo Somu, Penang State EXCO (State Minister) for Housing and Environment represented the Chief Minister of Penang and graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. High Commissioner H. E. B. N. Reddy welcomed the gathering and commended Swami Supriyananda for his visionary leadership of over 15 years in Malaysia. He lauded the efforts of Ramakrishna Mission Malaysia for organizing this event and for its unwavering commitment to the spiritual and social welfare of humanity. Rev Swami Satyalokananda, Vice-President, RK Mission, Singapore graced the event and delivered the key note address. Rev Swami Supriyananda, President, Ramakrishna Mission Malaysia delivered the valedictory address on the occasion. High Commission organized an exhibition on the life and teachings of Swami Vivekananda on this occasion along with a book display. On this occasion, High Commission gifted books on Swami Vivekananda to Penang Institute. The event was attended by about 160 members including members of Ramakrishna Mission Malaysia, representatives of various community associations, children from Tamil Schools in Penang and members of media.

36th Year Annual Thyagaraja Aradhana Utsavam, an annual festival that honours the life of Saint Thyagaraja, a renowned composer of Carnatic music. TIC Carnatic Vocal, NSCBICC, Mr. Sreekumar Ramakrishnan was among the singers who took part in this grand occasion. He also accompanied the singers on flute. The Aradhana brought the musicians together to pay tribute to saint Thyagaraja by performing his iconic Pancharatna Kritis. This vibrant celebration showcased the lasting impact of saint Thyagaraja’s remarkable contributions to Indian classical music, cementing his legacy as a musical genius. Director of NSCBICC Ms. Vijayalakshmy Sunderrajan participated as the Chief Guest and congratulated SLGV who is also one of the GIA recipients for their noble effort in promoting and nurturing Indian Culture.

NSCBICC was happy to join the Rotti Habba festival at Kuala Lumpur celebrated by Naavunammamandi (Kannada Association). Celebrating the harvest season with breads made from millets (sorghum, pearl millet) and delicacies of fresh vegetables, the festival brings together the community through the distinct cuisine and culture of Uttara Karnataka. Rotti Habba serves as a platform to raise awareness about their health benefits, environmental sustainability and economic significance. North Karnataka, a region steeped in cultural and agricultural heritage, holds a special place in India’s millet history. Millets, traditionally referred to as ‘Siridhanya’ (rich grains), have been a staple food in this semi-arid region for centuries. Known for their drought-resilience and adaptability to poor soils, millets have been central to the diet, economy, and ecology of North Karnataka. The programme featured captivating cultural dance performances and soulful Janapada songs, followed by a delightful lunch showcasing a variety of millet-based dishes and culinary specialties. Director of NSCBICC Ms. Vijayalakshmy Sunderrajan participated as the Chief Guest and congratulated the team for their efforts to promote millets. Rotti Habba served as a platform to raise awareness about health benefits, environmental sustainability and economic significance of millets.

NSCBICC celebrated the harvest festivals of India which are Lohri, Pongal and Makara Sankranti under the name ‘Ullas’, Ullas means exuberance and signifies the essence of unity, celebration and the vibrant colours of India. Mr. Ramlan Mohd Imam, the Director of Innovation, Strategic Network & Marketing Division Academy of Arts, Culture and National Heritage (ASWARA) attended the event as the chief guest and witnessed the entire programme. In his address, he congratulated NSCBICC for the effort taken to promote Indian culture and for the opportunity to collaborate with ASWARA for both parties’ benefits. He also encouraged institutions and art academies engage with ASWARA. Today’s event was supported by GIA recipients, Greentown Indian Cultural Society, Sruthi Laya Ghana Vidyaalaya, Laasya Arts Academy and Sugam Karnatica whose founders with their students gave diverse performances. The performance sections commenced with semi classical Carnatic Vocal Kuthcheri led by TIC Carnatic Vocal Mr. Sreekumar Ramakrishnan. Mr. Subain Singam from Greentown Ipoh performed Tavil; Mr. JJ Prathap Sharma from Sruti Laya Ghana Vidhyalaya accompanied with Mridangam and Mr. Rama Krishan Muthiah presented folk instruments like dolak.

The programme continued with folk Punjabi songs and a mesmerising Ghazal ‘Tum ko dekha’ by Bhai Mardaana Sangeet Academy, a Hindustani classical music-based institution led by Mr. Arvinder Singh Raina and accompanied by Mr. Harkeerat Singh and Mr. Hanouck Qadir Stephen. Sugam Karnatica performed Bharathanatyam of ‘Pushpanjali and Nadesha Kauthuvam’, while Laasya Arts Academy entertained us with Indian folkdance items. ‘Kaathuvaakula – An Ode to Soil’. In this dance, the song drew everyone’s attention to the telltale signs of soil degradation. The performers were felicitated by the Chief Guest.

The annual event of World Hindi Day or Vishwa Hind Divas 2025 was celebrated at NSCBICC with extensive participation from many schools in Malaysia such as Global Indian International School, Valley International School, Tanarata International School, Sprout Academy, Sayfol International School and community organisations such as Geeta Ashram, Bihar Cultural Association, Marwadi Youth Forum Malaysia, Maharashtra Mandal Malaysia and Bharat Club Kuala Lumpur cooperated. Deputy High Commissioner Ms. Subhashini Narayanan participated in the programme and honoured the participants and winners of various competitions. In her address, she highlighted the message of Hon’ble Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi on the occasion of World Hindi Day 2025 and called on the lively Indian community living in Malaysia, especially the young generation and student community to promote the use of Hindi language. Drama “Mangalamay Udaan” presented by Geeta Ashram, “Alpha Jain Connecting Hindi” presented by Maharashtra Mandal Malaysia and puppet dance performed by Marwadi Yuva Manch won hearts of the audience. India Club Kuala Lumpur and Bihar Cultural Association also participated enthusiastically with poems and presentations. As a part of the function, children participated in the ‘Language Knowledge Competition’ (Hindi Translation Competition) with enthusiasm and won prizes. Students participating in the Hindi language classes at NSCBICC presented Hindi songs.

Vishwaroop Ram: The Universal Legacy of Ramayan

Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi visited ICCR’s stunning exhibition: Vishwaroop Ram: The Universal Legacy of Ramayan at the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas in Bhubaneswar, guided by Director General, ICCR, Mrs. K. Nandini Singla. The exhibition celebrates the global cultural impact of the Ram and Ramayana besides presented the timeless epic of Ramayana through a curated juxtaposition of traditional and contemporary art forms. Malaysia through NSCBICC took part in this exhibition by sending six leather puppets of characters, Sri Rama, Sita Dewi, Mahraja Vana, Kumbakarna, Vali and Vibhusana which are used in ‘Wayang Kulit’. Wayang Kulit has connection to Malaysia’s Ramayan epic. Including Malaysia, the exhibition showcased treasures from 23 countries, highlights include stamps from Nepal, Korea & Canada; Pinnata from Mexico & Ravana Hatha from Sri Lanka; Puppets & masks from Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar & Cambodia; sculptures from Thailand; manuscripts, translations & Persian translation of Ramayana and Japan’s animated Ramayana film. As the Indian diaspora reconnects with its roots, this exhibition stands as a tribute to the enduring cultural legacy of the Ramayana worldwide.

The live stream of the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) Convention 2025 was organized for local PIO (Persons of Indian Origin) organizations. The PBD event, held in partnership with the State Government of Odisha, took place from January 8–10, 2025, in Bhubaneswar. The PBD Convention is a flagship event of the Government of India, providing a key platform to connect and engage with the Indian diaspora and enable them to interact with one another. The theme of this year’s PBD Convention was “Diaspora’s Contribution to a Viksit Bharat” (Developed India). A large number of Indian diaspora members from over 50 different countries registered to participate in the event. The live stream of the inauguration featured Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, and included a virtual address from the Chief Guest, H.E. Christine Carla Kangaloo, President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. In his inaugural remarks, the Prime Minister addressed the diaspora with inspiring words, emphasising the enduring bond between India and its overseas community. The event also saw the participation of the Chief Minister of Odisha, Hon’ble Shri Mohan Charan Majhi, and External Affairs Minister, Dr. S. Jaishankar. This significant event, aimed at celebrating the contributions of the Indian diaspora to the nation’s development, was attended by prominent community leaders and heads. Director NSCBICC Ms. Vijayalakshmy Sunderrajan paid a courtesy visit to Academy of Arts, Culture and National Heritage (ASWARA), an educational institution, which nurtures competent artists, performers and cultural practitioners of Malaysia. Director met the Rector of ASWARA Prof. Dr. Tan Awang Besar along with his management team. The discussion led to future collaborations and connection between NSCBICC and ASWARA in promoting culture across. As ASWARA has Music Faculty and Fine Arts Faculty, they are keen to have more lecture demonstrations as well as outreach programmes on music to impart knowledge to the students. The Rector is also happy to receive and acknowledge more cultural troupe visits in future which can turn as a workshop, academia talks or seminars. Since past 30 years in Malaysia, ASWARA also teaches Baratanatyam to their students as a compulsory subject. Director NSCBICC Ms. Vijayalakshmy Sunderrajan met Ekamjot Kaur from Patiala, Punjab, who is the world record holder of maximum saplings planted in one minute for planting the maximum number of saplings in one minute. She also planted 12 saplings of neem in one minute, at the age of 8 years. She paid a courtesy visit to Director NSCBICC to explain more about her purpose and share details of her visit to Malaysia as well as her dedication in environment protection. She also shared details of her activities supporting World Environment Day and #एक_पेड़_माँ_के_नाम (#Plant4Mother) initiative. Director lauded the efforts taken by Ekamjot in taking such keen interest in green initiatives at such a young age. Besides helping improve the environment and reduce the carbon footprint at the local level she is also creating an example for other students to live a sustainable lifestyle.

ICCR had sought exhibits like masks, puppets, handicrafts etc. for showcasing in an exhibition on Ramayana that was inaugurated by Hon’ble Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi at Bhubaneswar, Odisha on January 8, 2025 as part of 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas celebrations. It was in the above connection that a courtesy call was made on Dato’ Kept. Professor Emeritus Dr. Hashim Yaacob, former Vice Chancellor of University of Malaya and a prominent shadow puppeteer of ‘Wayang Kulit’ in Kuala Lumpur by the Director of NSCBICC, Ms. Vijayalakshmy Sunderrajan. The visit helped her gain knowledge and insights on the connection with Ramayana in Malaysia’s context and also arrange for some books and Wayang Kulit puppets to be sent to ICCR. The Wayang Kulit narrates the various episodes of ‘Hikayat Seri Rama’ – a Malay version of Ramayana. NSCBICC was able to procure two books titled ‘Hikayat Mahraja Wana versi Wayang Kulit Melayu Traditional Kelantan’ and ‘The Kelantan Malay Traditional Shadow Play’ books along with six leather puppets of the following characters: Sri Rama, Sita Dewi, Mahraja Vana, Kumbakarna, Vali and Vibhusana, from the professor. Talks are also ongoing for the eminent professor to perform Ramayana based Wayang Kulit puppetry show at NSCBICC, to promote and disseminate the knowledge, skills and importance of the legendary epic of Indian.

As an auspicious beginning to the year 2025, the Management of Sri Sakthi Easwari Temple in Petaling Jaya organised a special prayer session and Carnatic Vocal Kutcheri as part of the temple’s New Year celebrations. The event featured a performance by the TIC of Carnatic Vocal, NSCBICC, Mr. Sreekumar Ramakrishnan, who was accompanied by his students for this soulful event. This performance was a part of Mr. Sreekumar’s outreach programme, aimed at spreading the rich tradition of Carnatic music and devotional singing. He along with the NSCBICC Carnatic Vocal students rendered a series of soul-stirring devotional songs, dedicated to the Goddess, invoking blessings for the New Year. The divine melodies, steeped in tradition, not only created a spiritually uplifting atmosphere but also helped usher in the year 2025 with reverence and positivity. The Director of NSCBICC, Ms. Vijayalakshmy Sunderrajan, also graced the event and participated in the prayers. This special gathering at Sri Sakthi Easwari Temple marked an extraordinary blend of devotion, music and cultural heritage, offering devotees a unique opportunity to experience the power of Carnatic music in a sacred space.
