The talk titled Manoeuvring Tradition: Contemporary Visual Expressions from South Asia was delivered by Dr. Rajashree Biswal, Art historian (Fulbright Postdoctoral Fellow) and Artistic and Curatorial Director of New Bridge India. Ms. Amrita Dash, Counsellor, High Commission of India, Malaysia was the Guest of Honour on this occasion. Padma Shri Datuk Ramli Ibrahim, eminent Odissi Dancer, and the Founder of Sutra Foundation emphasised on the importance of the continuity of traditional art and cultural forms; moreover, he appreciated the possibilities of transcultural interaction and experimentation, and beauty of multiple identities in a globalised society. Dr. Rajashree Biswal, in order to underscore the significance of the talk, foregrounded the framework as complex entanglement of various terms and concepts like ‘manoeuvrings’, ‘tradition’, ‘the geopolitical construct South-Asia’ and ‘contemporary visual expressions. She highlighted that ‘tradition’ is often a fraught concept. ‘Tradition’ needs to preserve its essence as it attributes to the ‘identity’ of a community or civilization; but ‘innovation’ and ‘critique’ of ‘tradition’ are important for continuation of any tradition in a positive spirit. According to her, ‘South-Asia’ as a geopolitical construct is a narrative of overwhelming similarities and differences with interrelated political narratives and partitions, interdependent and common ecosystem, art, heritage, and socio-cultural practices.

Moreover, the field of ‘contemporary art’ is an expanded field with radical ‘openness’ and ‘diversities’ in terms of materials, mediums, methods, approaches, subjectivities of art making as well as diverse issues of life addressed through art. Dr. Rajashree Biswal touched upon the dynamics of continuity and change in traditional art forms in Odisha. Moreover, she investigated the contemporary creative expressions of Odishan and Indian artists as well as artists from the South Asian nations like Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, and Maldives who have engaged with ‘tradition’ through their art by ‘appropriation’, ‘assimilation’, ‘interrogation’, or ‘criticism’ of tradition in their specific geo-political and cultural contexts.

This talk was also the first significant talk on ‘contemporary visual expressions from South Asia related to tradition’ in a critical perspective in a South -East Asian platform of Malaysia. This talk thus opens new spaces and discourses with possibilities for further ‘intra-Asia’ dialogue.

His Excellency Shri B.N. Reddy, High Commissioner of India to Malaysia who was the chief guest delivered his keynote remarks. He set the tone for the evening by offering an insightful overview of the richly documented royal politics, intrigues and lifestyles of India’s queens and princesses. The Indian subcontinent, once abundant with royal houses before the formation of the Republic of India, boasts a wealth of stories about its medieval queens and princesses. The talk explored the depiction of royal women in the Malay world, questioning whether Nusantara women in ancient times were accurately portrayed with gentleness and elegance.

Among the Malay literary texts referred to were “Tuhfat al-Nafis” and “Hikayat Siak,” to explore themes of agency and independence. Several fundamental Malay feudal concepts, including ‘daulat’, ‘derhaka’, ‘tulah’, and ‘kerajaan’, which define the covenant and relationship between the Raja and the ra’ayat, were explained to the audience beforehand. A variety of women’s narratives were examined – replete with moments of happiness, sorrow, and betrayal. The talk aimed to uncover tensions within these texts, challenging preconceived notions about women and traditional Malay society. The stories of these women were unravelled, from well-known figures to those who remain elusive. The discussion extended beyond literary works to explore historical figures from pre-independence times, including queens, princesses, concubines and slaves within the realm of Malay royalty. Padma Shri Datuk Ramli Ibrahim expertly moderated the Question and Answer session, fostering robust interaction between the speakers and the audience. This discussion encouraged a reassessment of the varied roles these women held, enhancing our understanding of their influence on traditional Malay society. Together, the audience was invited to challenge established narratives, fostering a deeper appreciation of the complexities of women’s experiences and their essential contributions to shaping history.
